In Copenhagen's finest neighborhood, the buildings line up side by side along the main street Østerbrogade, each one more refined than the next. The elegant block buildings testify to a time of growth and prosperity. Especially by Sortedams Sø, magnificent corner towers and grandiose gate motifs adorn the houses, setting the standard for the area. It was here that the wealthy urban residents first settled and enjoyed themselves. As you move down the street past the many tall apartment buildings, you may intuitively notice a small yellow corner building. At Østerbrogade 146, a three-story break in the otherwise stringent rhythm can be observed. The building dates back to a time when Østerbro was just a field where cattle grazed and the coastline was just around the corner. Much has happened since then, and to this day (2022), one would not believe that Østerbrogade 146 was the very first to see the light of day.
CRAFTSMANSHIP AND DETAILS
In recent years, the craftsmanship trade has almost become obsolete because prefabricated concrete elements and shell bricks have taken over. The main feature of this house is to focus on good building traditions and thereby also the scales that appeal to humans. Machines can be used for elements that do not affect the building's tactility.
LIVING IN THE CITY
In the city, people share many things, but increasingly more are choosing to live alone. Would it be possible to live closer together and thereby also benefit from each other and reduce the risk of loneliness? The city is meant for people to come together. In the proposal for the small yellow corner house, one would live compactly but live large. In practice, this means small room areas but generous communal spaces. The ground floor is a restaurant with communal dining and a café intended for both residents and outside guests. The top floor is a space for creative expression. The floors in between are for living quarters with rooms, bathrooms, toilets, and living areas.
HOMELINESS
To blur the boundary between residents and guests and create a homely feeling in the semi-public spaces, shoes and outerwear are left at the entrance. Therefore, the cloakroom is located at the main entrance.
